Synopsis | The television series that shot Johnny Depp to stardom makes the leap to the big screen in this reboot starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) have the kind of faces that could let them pass for teenagers. Eager to prove themselves as effective policemen, the pair join the Jump Street program and go undercover to investigate a high-school drug ring. Now, the only thing more daunting than the prospect of taking on violent adolescent dope slingers is the possibility of experiencing the torture of their teenage years all over again. Ice Cube, Brie Larson, and Rob Riggle co-star.3 stars out of 5 -- [T]his mix of buddy-buddy cop movie and high-school comedy is surprisingly fun-packed from start to finish.[T]he movie morphs into an action comedy with a tonal complexity that marks it as a very contemporary creative project....21 JUMP STREET is a riot of risks that pay off, the biggest of which might be handing Tatum funny business. -- Grade: A-3 stars out of 4 -- [O]ne of the pleasures of 21 JUMP STREET is that the screenplay by Michael Bacall and Jonah Hill is happy to point out all of its improbabilities; the premise is preposterous to begin with, and they run with that.[C]heerfully chaotic, gleefully vulgar....The most agreeable parts turn on the unlikely affection that grows between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as screw-up cops and reluctant buddies...[The film has] an endearing, punch-you-in-the-arm-because-I-like-you-man charm.[Tatum] has the kind of comic timing that’s deceptively laid-back and sharp at the same time.4.5 out of 5 -- Jonah Hill is masterful at delivering absurd stories with so much sweetness, the nonsense can't even get in the way. If you loved SUPERBAD...this could be your new favorite movie.21 JUMP STREET is an example of how formula-driven entertainment can succeed....silly, spirited and, yes, smart enough to work.3 stars out of 4 -- [W]ith a fresh script, flip humor and inspired casting....It's that rare comedy that's funny throughout, with a hilarious story that hinges on the unlikely pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum...Hill is in fine form....It’s Tatum, an introspective actor not thought of as an exuberant funnyman, who rises to the occasion with a loose, mischievous performance...[T]here's enough disposable fun to be had in a script that relishes every chance to prove it's not trying too hard...3 stars out of 4 -- This bracing new take on 21 JUMP STREET has a playful spark all its own. It's a blast. |
