Synopsis BEFORE MIDNIGHT is a wonderful paradox: a movie passionately committed to the ideal of imperfection that is itself very close to perfect.A devastating fight is the centerpiece now, the teasing flirtations a distant memory....It sears with an intensity that rivals another classic battle between the sexes, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?3.5 stars out of 4 -- BEFORE MIDNIGHT is bittersweet, intelligently written, deftly acted and painfully honest.BEFORE MIDNIGHT reveals the full scope of Linklater’s ambition.....In the process of justifying its own existence, BEFORE MIDNIGHT redeems the very notion of sequels. -- Grade: A4 stars out of 4 -- Linklater and his actors expose small fissures with an admirable subtlety....BEFORE MIDNIGHT is enchanting...4 stars out of 4 -- Whatever a modern love story is, BEFORE MIDNIGHT takes it to the next level. It's damn near perfect. One of the great movie romances of the modern era achieves its richest and fullest expression in Richard Linklater's third walking-and-talking collaboration with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy...BEFORE MIDNIGHT is enchanting entertainment that's also the most honest and moving film about love in years. -- Grade: A4 stars out of 5 -- [T]his perfectly played, gently incisive film is a welcome new chapter in one of cinema's most beguiling ongoing romances.5 stars out of 5 -- MIDNIGHT's essentially a film about people talking. But when the talk’s this good, this absorbing and revealing and witty and true, who’s going to complain?Nine years after BEFORE SUNSET, their highly-regarded sequel to BEFORE SUNRISE, director Richard Linklater reteams with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for BEFORE MIDNIGHT, which finds their characters together raising twin daughters. Jesse (Hawke) attempts to maintain a relationship with Hank, his teenage son from his first marriage, but their bond is strained even though Hank has just spent the summer with his dad and step-family. Meanwhile, Celine (Delpy) must make a difficult decision about her career. As with BEFORE SUNSET, Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy share credit for the screenplay. BEFORE MIDNIGHT screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival as well as the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.
