Synopsis Like nearly every entry, this new one is worth seeing for the unfussy determination of Neeson, a couple of impressively choreographed action sequences, and an intriguing premise...One of the modern Hollywood B-movie’s most technically proficient and politically astute directors, Collet-Serra keeps his camera zipping...Neeson has transformed himself into a berserker for our time, an action hero who will go to any and all lengths to right wrongs and rescue those close to him.[A] film that enthusiastically puts the humble passenger car through almost as many mechanical acrobatics as any FAST AND FURIOUS hot rod...THE COMMUTER feels like one of those films they simply don’t make anymore, at least in Hollywood. It's a certified B-movie without superheroes or interplanetary travel, drawing its power from a whodunit, race-against-the-clock scenario...Neeson -- still an action hero to cheer for -- carries the day through ax battles, train-car chases and one fight scene in a confined space that just kills.3 stars out of 5 -- Collet-Serra is constantly finding new places to put the camera....The camera even flies through the punched hole of a train ticket in one gratifying shot.Neeson makes for an engaging everyman-in-peril, and is at his most relatable as the newly unemployed insurance salesman having a bad day take a turn for the worse.THE COMMUTER is filled with little hints that will end up mattering to the plot at large, and half the fun is watching Collet-Serra toss them into the margins of the frame and see if the viewer will notice.THE COMMUTER is blessed with some of the deftest setpieces in recent pop cinema memory...During his daily commute from Manhattan to Upstate New York, a cop-turned-insurance salesman (Liam Neeson) is approached by a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga), who tells him that he must locate a passenger who's carrying something dangerous. If he fails, everyone aboard the train, as well as his family at home, will be killed. Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth McGovern, Sam Neill, and Jonathan Banks co-star. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.
