Synopsis CREED applies its clear formula with grit and determination... -- Grade: B+[A] spiritual remake of the 1976 film that retells the original story in the kind of involving way one would not have thought possible.4 stars out of 4 -- There are as many quietly effective moments as there are stand-up-and-cheer moments, and they’re all handled with skill and dexterity on both sides of the camera.[T]hanks to a charismatic, natural performance from star-in-the-making Michael B. Jordan, a script from writer-director Ryan Coogler that expertly navigates paying tribute to the franchise while creating an effective stand-alone film and fine work from Stallone...In the end it’s a movie about legacy, and it more than preserves the Rocky franchise’s. It reminds you why it was great in the first place. -- Grade: A3 stars out of 4 -- We have a winner....So irresistible is Stallone's blend of tough and tender that Oscar should give him points.Stallone’s degree of confidence in his director shows through. Without straining for pathos, using his battered body as an asset but never as a prop, the actor finds continually surprising, understated notes of tenderness and regret.Stallone is at his near-best as he charmingly walks the line between weary resignation at the encroachment of old age and the inextinguishable desire to get back in the game again.4 stars out of 5 -- Stallone can act, and here he gives perhaps his best performance. And that’s a punch nobody could have seen coming.Adonis Johnson Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, attempts to follow in his father's footsteps and become a boxing legend in his own right. Apollo died in the ring in the 1980s at the hand of Russian pugilist Ivan Drago, forcing Adonis to grow up without his dad in his life. The young man travels to Philadelphia to find his late father's nemesis-turned-best friend, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), in order to recruit him as a trainer. Balboa soon takes the young Creed under his wing and helps him get in shape for a shot at the title. Ryan Coogler directs this spin-off of the hugely successful ROCKY franchise.
