Synopsis Chastain’s performance -- icy-cold, unblinking, and perpetually teetering on the edge of deranged -- is a highlight.CRIMSON PEAK is filled with many marvels, its bravura, show-stopping visuals not the least among them.4 stars out of 4 -- Watching Del Toro's films is a pleasure because his vision is evident in every frame. If you know what you’re getting into and you’re in the mood for blood, velvet and a director’s sincere commitment to excess, then this might be just the ticket.4 stars out of 5 -- [I]f you're partial to a bit of Victorian romance with Hammer horror gloop and big, frilly night-gowns, GDT delivers an uncommon treat.Between the gorgeous, rain-soaked cinematography and textured production design, these early, period spook scenes contain compelling nods back to del Toro’s great ghost story, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE.[A] ghost story in which superior camerawork, costumes and production design work together to put the audience in a trance.Set in 19th-century England, in a decrepit but picturesque manor home, and starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, the film by the stylish fantasist Guillermo del Toro looks marvelous...In this gothic romance set at the turn of the 20th century, a mysterious stranger named Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) woos young author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) and brings her as his bride to his mansion atop a clay mountain in Cumbria, England. There, Edith meets Sharpe's strange and secretive sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain), and learns that her new home holds many disturbing secrets that will force her to fight for her sanity and her very life. Directed by Guillermo del Toro.
