Synopsis For Verbinski, it’s a return to form -- or more specifically, to the muted color palette, amateur detective work, and shock scares of his best movie, THE RING.DeHaan, so memorably unsympathetic in movies like KILL YOUR DARLINGS and CHRONICLE, is ideally cast as a surly, skeptical antihero.A CURE FOR WELLNESS defiantly and splendidly flouts the tenets of plausibility and coherence, which have never interested Mr. Verbinski very much.A CURE FOR WELLNESS is bold -- an epically long, giddily violent piece of Gothic storytelling, crammed to the gills with beautiful camerawork, obvious symbolism, and lots and lots of eels. The location is clearly the star here, as production design maestro Eve Stewart seamlessly combines the stark institutional feel of Germany’s Beelitz-Heilstätten hospital with the hilltop perch of Hohenzollern Castle, surrounded by breathtaking panoramas of the Alps. The film's most striking images come at the very beginning, with near-dark vistas of Midtown Manhattan office buildings creating a haunting sense of stupendous man-made monuments and canyons.[T]he gorgeously disturbing new film by Gore Verbinski adamantly refuses to spill its secrets...3 stars out of 5 -- Anyone emerging from Gore Verbinski’s creepy, byzantine but wildly eccentric spa-based potboiler without needing a few days’ R&R of their own is truly made of stern stuff.3 stars out of 5 -- Jason Isaacs is great fun as Dr Heinrich Volmer, presiding over the institution with velvety menace; Mia Goth is suitably unearthly as Volmer’s 'special case', Hannah.A young executive (Dane DeHaan) must travel to an isolated spa in the Swiss Alps in order to find and bring home the CEO of his company. But when he begins digging into the truth behind the resort's supposed miracle cures, the staff diagnose him with the same affliction that has left the other guests trapped there. Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth co-star. Directed by Gore Verbinski.
