Synopsis The film's cute flourishes and gamely broad performances from Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman could make it a sentimental success for family audiences.Matthew Margeson's synth-heavy score apes 1988 perfectly well, and the gravity-defying action gives this pic a slight thrill-ride edge over COOL RUNNINGS, which was based on another unlikely story from the 1988 Winter Games and was a clear inspiration here...4 stars out of 5 -- Taron Egerton is charm personified as Eddie. He doesn’t caricature his eccentricities and keeps a glint of optimism even as the obstacles look insurmountable. Jackman makes a great foil...All of it should serve as ironic comfort food for people raised on ’80s sports movies...Who doesn't love an underdog sports story? That's especially true when it's one as diverting and big-hearted as EDDIE THE EAGLE, the ebullient tale of Britain's wildly unlikely, first-ever Winter Olympics ski jumper...Taron Egerton gives a winning performance as one Michael “Eddie” Edwards...The infectious EDDIE THE EAGLE succeeds by mining both aspects of Edwards’s story with an equally deft touch.4 stars out of 5 -- Dexter Fletcher’s semi-biopic dramedy is likely to be the most purely uplifting film of the year.3 stars out of 5 -- [A] morale-boosting initiative, but briskly jolly, and given a dash of class by Jim Broadbent, Christopher Walken and a wonderfully unctuous Tim McInnerny.Sports biopic of Michael Eddie the Eagle Edwards (Taron Egerton), whose participation in the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary marked the first time a Brit had ever competed in the ski-jumping event. Edwards trains as a ski jumper under the tutelage of a hard-drinking former champ (Hugh Jackman), and eventually finds fame as a lovable loser who's just trying his best. Directed by Dexter Fletcher.
