Synopsis If you close your eyes while watching FENCES, you can listen as the extraordinary language of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, some of the most thrilling speeches ever heard on an American stage, washes over you and lifts you up.3.5 stars out of 4 -- Washington carves FENCES out of his own heart and soul....In bringing Wilson to the screen for the first time, the star does the playwright proud.Troy is one of the indelible characters in American dramatic literature, equal to -- and in some ways a pointed response to -- Arthur Miller’s Willy Loman.Washington gives a magnetic, layered performance, backed by a largely superb cast, most of whom reprise their roles from the Broadway revival of Wilson’s classic.4 stars out of 4 -- Washington as director knows that the biggest star in this film is its writing....FENCES is much more powerful for his devotion to his actors’ craft.Denzel Washington delivers a leonine, devouringly powerful performance as one of American theater’s most imposing patriarchs in FENCES, a classic of contemporary dramatic literature that has finally received a respectful, often stirring, adaptation for the screen.Wilson’s dialogue is a marvel -- soulful, naturalistic, and profane, at moments downright musical in the snap of its cadences. And Washington tears through it with a joyful ferocity, like a man possessed.FENCES is as faithful, impeccably acted and honestly felt a film adaptation of August Wilson's celebrated play as the late author could have possibly wished for.4 stars out of 5 -- [I]t’s heartening to find a cinematic release so celebratory of the spoken word, especially at a time when bombastic effects and splashy visuals are so much to the fore.Denzel Washington directed and stars in this adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which centers on a black garbage collector named Troy Maxson in 1950s Pittsburgh. Bitter that baseball's color barrier was only broken after his own heyday in the Negro Leagues, Maxson is prone to taking out his frustrations on his loved ones. Both Washington and co-star Viola Davis won Tonys for their performances in the 2010 revival of the play. Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson round out the supporting cast.
