Synopsis Stephen Frears keeps it as light, jubilant, silly and celebratory as the woman herself...3 stars out of 5 -- [T]here are no wrong notes in this film: Frears remains entirely confident within the emotional range he has chosen...3.5 stars out of 4 -- [With] Meryl Streep, pulling off yet another miraculous physical transformation that is as delicious in its own way as was her joyful depiction of famed chef Julia Child in JULIE AND JULIA.As one might expect from a prestige project like this one, the production value on FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS is quite high, and the costumes and set dressing expertly done. -- Grade: B-3 stars out of 4 -- Meryl Streep has a ball giving her all to the title role of FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS, the Ed Wood of delusional opera singers.Streep of course is impeccable at everything, including being awful....Grant’s tender, conflicted performance, though, is a small revelation... -- Grade: B+Heiress Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) longs to become an opera star in 1940s New York, despite possessing a horrible singing voice. With the help and encouragement of her husband (Hugh Grant) and a talented musician (Simon Helberg), she finds a very strange kind of success as a performer and recording artist. Rebecca Ferguson and Nina Arianda co-star. Stephen Frears (PHILOMENA) directed this biopic, which is based on the real-life socialite and opera singer of the same name.
