Synopsis 3.5 stars out of 5 -- [A] disciplined, proficient thriller....The audience that craves mature, sophisticated and grown-up entertainment will find much to admire here.Mr. Polanski is a master of menace....He creates a wholly believable world rich in strange contradictions and ominous implications.[A] sharp political conspiracy tale....It's an intelligent and deftly honed return to the genre, blending a contemporary plot and classic structure.[I]n its entertaining mix of the topical and the personal, the film is a vital record of the times, both for its maker and the world from his window. -- Grade: B+[I]t's Williams who provides the most pleasure in a gradually evolving role that at one point takes on a calculated sexiness.GHOST is far more than a suspense film, and its cast is a cache of jewels -- the most glittering of which is Olivia Williams, who, in a virtuoso performance as Lang's wife Ruth, creates a character who defies all casual adjectives...[D]eliciously unsettling....A dark pearl of a movie whose great flair and precision make it Polanski's best work in quite a while...Thankfully the final word, as it were, is pure Polanski, an image of shocking darkness and startling beauty as uncanny and elliptic as it creator.4 stars out of 4 -- This movie is the work of a man who knows how to direct a thriller. Smooth, calm, confident, it builds suspense instead of depending on shock and action.3 stars out of 4 -- [D]irector Roman Polanski invites viewers to settle back and simply enjoy a ride whose sinuous curves he navigates with supreme assurance and skill...Polanski and Harris do a jolly good job of letting the circles of untrustworthy characters ripple outward, like rings from a stone thrown into water... -- Grade: B+3.5 stars out of 5 -- All credit to a finely tunes Brosnan for packing so much intensity and wayward wit into his scenes with McGregor.3 stars out of 5 -- THE GHOST is a perfectly passable political suspenser with enough Romanesque flair to satiate admirers.3 stars out of 5 -- Polanski has drawn out strong turns from McGregor and Brosnan and an excellent one from Olivia Williams.Ewan McGregor's blend of studied seriousness and puppyish innocence is perfectly suited to the title role....Immediately entertaining...Included in Roger Ebert's The Best Films of 2010 -- The movie is the work of a man who knows how to direct a thriller.A ghostwriter stumbles onto a secret that places his life in danger as he takes down the life story of a former U.K. prime minister in this Roman Polanski-helmed adaptation of the Robert Harris novel. Convinced by his agent that he's been granted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, talented British screenwriter The Ghost (Ewan McGregor) agrees to aid British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) in completing his memoirs after the leader's former aide dies under mysterious circumstances. Almost immediately after The Ghost arrives at a remote mansion in the U.S. to begin working with the prime minister, Lang is accused of committing a war crime by a former British cabinet minister. Amidst a deluge of protestors and reporters, The Ghost delves into the unfinished manuscript and comes to the terrifying conclusion that his predecessor died because he discovered a link between Prime Minister Lang and the CIA. The more information The Ghost uncovers, the more convinced he becomes that his life could be in danger as well.
