Synopsis Like the often overlooked A SERIOUS MAN, this is all about the absurdity of crises of faith.[I]t is delightful....HAIL, CAESAR is nothing more and nothing less than a profession of the Coens’ faith in movies, as snarky and sincere as they can make it.4 stars out of 4 -- HAIL, CAESAR! is an exhilarating switchup: A comic fable that’s both deftly clever and irrepressibly goofy. It is also, from stem to stern, the sweetest and sunniest film the Coens have ever made.HAIL, CAESAR! is pure, popcorn fun -- a visual treat, a comedic tour de force and a sublime and sly slice of satire.Created by Joel and Ethan Coen, those mighty monarchs of sendups and satires, this droll tribute to and spoof of Hollywood past amuses from beginning to end with its site specific re-creation of the studio system and the movies that made it famous.3.5 stars out of 4 -- Brolin, in a heart-and-soul performance, takes this crazy quilt of a movie about a man surrounded by nut jobs and plays it for real. He's just tremendous.4 stars out of 5 -- It is undiluted, absolute Coens, spring-loaded with cinematic chicanery and showing the arch tricksters at their most playful -- or, put another way, insular. It’s a typically sly, off-center comedy, once again set against the machinery of the motion-picture business. And, as usual with the Coens, it has more going on than there might seem...4 stars out of 5 -- This is the Dream Factory operating at maximum productivity, and Joel and Ethan revel in the absurdities of the studio system...If there’s such a thing as poker-faced exuberance, you can feel it in every loving, teasing frame of Joel and Ethan Coen’s HAIL, CAESAR! an inside-showbiz lark that regards the 1950s studio system with the utmost skepticism even as it becomes an expression of movie love at its purest.4 stars out of 5 -- This is the Dream Factory operating at maximum productivity, and Joel and Ethan revel in the absurdities of the studio system...3 stars out of 5 --- The Coen brothers’ lovingly goofy latest comes on like a breezy flipside companion-piece to Barton Fink – a jaunt through the underbelly of old Hollywood...Slick Hollywood fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is pressed into action when superstar actor Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped and held for ransom by a mysterious group. Mannix races to quietly collect the ransom money without gossip columnists Thessaly and Thora Thacker (Tilda Swinton in a dual role) catching wind of the scandal. Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand, and Channing Tatum co-star in this comedy set in Hollywood's golden age. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.
