Synopsis Personal filmmaking doesn't get better or more brilliant, beguiling, original and heart-crushing than this.Jonze's satiric, brave-new-world premise is undeniably clever... -- Grade: BMr. Jonze approaches perfection in the department of deadpan humor....He draws us into Theodore's world, then develops it brilliantly, by playing everything scrupulously straight.Four films into a sterling career, the director’s made his most beguiling, profoundly human work yet. -- Grade: A3.5 stars out of 4 -- HER is a timely, soulful and plausible love story. Director-writer Spike Jonze's latest also is an evocative showcase for substantive ideas, stunning photography and production design...4 stars out of 4 -- Joaquin Phoenix delivers a gentle, thoroughly disarming performance in HER, a wildly inventive, scrupulously understated romance from Spike Jonze.Acerbic, emotional, provocative, it's a risky high dive off the big board with a plot that sounds like a gimmick but ends up haunting, odd and a bit wonderful. At once a brilliant conceptual gag and a deeply sincere romance, HER is the unlikely yet completely plausible love story about a man, who sometimes resembles a machine, and an operating system, who very much suggests a living woman.3.5 stars out of 4 -- Jonze is a visionary whose lyrical, soulful meditation on relationships of the future cuts to the heart of the way we live now.3.5 stars out of 4 -- Spike Jonze's HER plays like a kind of miracle the first time around. Watching its opening shots of Joaquin Phoenix making an unabashed declaration of eternal love to an unseen soul mate is immediately disarming...Spike Jonze’s HER is a tender, wry, deceptively modest package -- and the closer you look, the more it reveals itself to be the proverbial Movie For Our Times.4 stars out of 5 -- [T]he pain, joy and fear that Jonze depicts feels universal.4 stars out of 5 -- Jonze has made a sweet, smart, silly, serious film for our times...[T]he film takes its romance as seriously as it does its insights into the way we use electronic media and what it’s doing to us. Jonze and his actors go all out to make the relationship seem real...Voicing Samantha, Scarlett Johansson is husky, warm and involving -- much as you’d imagine. There is good support, too, from 'Parks And Recreation'’s Chris Pratt...Joaquin Phoenix stars in Spike Jonze's soulful sci-fi drama about a lonely writer who falls in love with his computer's highly advanced operating system. Theodore Twombly (Phoenix) has built his career on expressing the emotions that others cannot. His job is to pen heartfelt, deeply personal letters to complete strangers based on details provided by the clients of the company he works for, and he has a knack for finding just the right words for every occasion. Meanwhile, reluctant to sign the papers that will finalize his divorce to his childhood sweetheart, depressed Theodore has slowly withdrawn from his supportive social circle, which includes his longtime friend Amy (Amy Adams), herself floundering in a failed marriage. When Theodore purchases a new state-of-the-art computer operating system with the ability to learn and grow with the user, he sits down at his desk and prepares to get his life in order. Adopting the name Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), the perceptive software slowly begins to bring Theodore out of his shell by encouraging him to start dating again, and joining him everywhere he goes. Very quickly, their relationship turns intimate, with Theodore teaching Samantha what it means to feel human and Samantha giving him the strength to walk away from his failed marriage. Things soon get complicated, however, when Samantha's rapidly evolving knowledge base begins to alter the very core of their relationship.
