Synopsis 3.5 stars out of 4 -- [I]t's Collette, giving the performance of her career, who takes us inside Annie's breakdown in flesh and spirit and shatters what's left of our nerves. Her tour de force bristles with provocations that for sure will keep you up nights.Creepy, creepy, creepy. Writer-director Ari Aster makes an impressively unnerving debut with HEREDITARY, a meticulously crafted horror thriller starring Toni Collette.5 stars out of 5 -- There are gasp-worthy images and shocking moments, but HEREDITARY trades in a more insidious, lingering kind of dread, one that’ll slowly burrow under your skin and have you squirming in discomfort.[A]n impressive, wrenching piece of horror....Aster has crafted a story with one foot in the world of the tense kitchen-sink drama and the other in something far more supernatural...The direction, shooting and orchestral score are all brilliant, but it would be nothing at all without the terrific performance of Toni Collette in the lead, her face a mask of fear and anger.4 stars out of 4 -- Creepy beyond belief....Aster and the cast make you care about these disturbed people and fear what they might do to one another, themselves and strangers. You know you’re at the mercy of a gifted filmmaker from the ominous first shot... -- Grade: A-[E]ngaging, unsettling and unpredictable, generating a mood of anxious fascination punctuated by frequent shocks and occasional nervous giggles. The shocks in this horror film are truly stunning and bizarre -- and will stay with you long after you’ve gone home.5 stars out of 5 -- [I]t takes the crawling-dread approach to horror, often serving up its most chilling shriek-treats before you even notice they’re right there in front of you. When her mentally ill mother passes away, a woman named Annie (Toni Collette) and her husband (Gabriel Byrne), son (Alex Wolff) and daughter (Milly Shapiro) all mourn her loss. The family turn to different means to handle their grief, including Annie and her daughter both flirting with the supernatural. They each begin to have disturbing, otherworldly experiences linked to the sinister secrets and emotional trauma that have been passed through the generations of their family. Written and directed by Ari Aster.[A] wonderfully artistic affair with metaphors about losing control as well as poisonous mistrust among loved ones.
