Synopsis Jackson's direction is spiky and majestic....[T]he dragon is, quite simply, a marvel... -- Grade: A-Mr. Jackson and his virtuoso colleagues stage much of the action with the visual vocabulary of a good, old-fashioned chase.Jackson's latest go at Tolkien's treasured HOBBIT story gets closer to that rich alchemy of fantasy, adventure, imagination and emotion that made his LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy such a triumph.Peter Jackson's HOBBIT trilogy finds its footing in this much more exciting and purposeful second chapter.Smaug is a bloody wonder of slithering fright. And Benedict Cumberbatch gives him a voice to match.3 stars out of 4 -- Second time’s the charm: Peter Jackson sophomore HOBBIT outing exudes a deeper, darker intensity.4 stars out of 5 -- Jackson does add to the breadth of the world, not least with the proper reintroduction of the Elves.Jackson gets the drama in gear here from the outset with a sense of storytelling that possesses palpable energy and purpose.Peter Jackson’s 3D visuals are as breathtaking as ever....Dwarves and hobbits and elves share the screen with giant spiders and oversized bees and other amazing creatures, and it all looks hyper-realistic.3.5 stars out of 4 -- The thematic elements are in place, the emotional tension is highly strung, and the action unfolds in a wave like the fire erupting from the dragon's mouth, overtaking all in its path.5 stars out of 5 -- A huge improvement on the previous instalment, this takes our adventurers into uncharted territory and delivers spectacle by the ton.Jackson remains a skilled purveyor of derring-do.The good news is that THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is a marvelous film, better paced, emotionally richer, and more tonally confident than JOURNEY.Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), his mighty band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), and wise wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) embark on a crusade to reclaim Erebor from the vicious dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) in this sweeping fantasy adventure that picks up where the events of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY left off. Peter Jackson (THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) once again directs from a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro.
