Synopsis Mr. Cage has stripped his performance bare of anything that might smack of a familiar star presence; what's left feels freshly discovered, for him and for us.While still small scale, JOE is a muscular film, its storytelling deeper, its setting striking, its acting resonant. This is a movie about restraint, which is exactly what its star demonstrates throughout. -- Grade: B3 stars out of 4 -- David Gordon Green directs a gritty script that Gary Hawkins adapts from a 1991 novel by Larry Brown. Gripping...4 stars out of 4 -- One of Green's great gifts as a filmmaker is his ability to create a real sense of mood and place throughout....JOE presents a world that will ring true to audiences at all points of the socio-economic spectrum...3 stars out of 4 -- If you need a reminder of what a fine, nuanced actor Nicolas Cage can be, take a look at JOE. This is the kind of artful character study that marked Cage's work in LEAVING LAS VEGAS, RAISING ARIZONA and ADAPTATION.The most indelible scenes in David Gordon Green’s JOE, filmed in the backwoods of Texas, have the fierce clarity of illuminations glimpsed in a lightning flash.Green's regular cinematographer, Tim Orr, brings to the exteriors his characteristically ripe, rich palette.4 stars out of 5 -- An understated Nicolas Cage...anchors a superbly realised film4 stars out of 5 -- As this chain-smoking, binge-drinking, bruiser-with-a-heart, Cage is better -- realer -- than he’s been for years…..Sheridan is a natural…David Gordon Green's JOE stars Nicolas Cage as the title character, the foreman of a work crew hired to poison trees before they are cleared from land owned by people who plan to develop it. One day, 15-year-old Gary (Tye Sheridan) arrives at the worksite looking for a job for both himself and his alcoholic, shiftless father. Joe hires them both, but the self-destructive dad is quickly told never to return. Gary, however, earns his keep, and soon he begins to think of Joe as a father figure. However, Joe has a prison record, and a problem keeping his explosive anger in check, and when a local man develops a grudge against him, both Gary and Joe must take a stand. JOE screened at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
