Synopsis 3 stars out of 5 -- Rinko Kikuchi's superb core performance and some striking photography stand out...[A] moody comic allegory about desperation, disconnection and dreams that uses FARGO, the Coen brothers classic, as a touchstone to examine modern life.Visually, the movie is a small miracle. The brothers build on striking imagery, from the harsh, cold spaces that sharply illustrate Japanese corporate conformity to the bleak wintry and desolate American landscapes.[A] deliberate, somber character study that semi-eerily morphs into comedy of middle-American manners and then into something else again.[A] delicate, haunting study of a woman who has in several senses lost her way. Rinko Kikuchi, nominated for a supporting-actress Oscar for BABEL, does lovely work as the title character...A lonely Japanese office worker leaves her life in Tokyo and travels to the United States after being convinced that the buried treasure depicted in a fictional film is not only real, but located deep beneath the North Dakota tundra.
