Synopsis [A] lovely, slow-burning drama....Poverty and broken families are less a subject of this delicate film than an integral part of its texture.[I]t’s a serious-minded, unvarnished glimpse into how it feels to be 15 and completely alone in the world.3.5 stars out of 4 -- It’s really the story of someone falling into a dangerous situation because he acts with his heart—he doesn’t know how to do anything else.Just about every scene in LEAN ON PETE, the sensitive, unvarnished, at times powerfully sad new drama from writer-director Andrew Haigh, reveals something small but important about the hardscrabble lives it chronicles. -- Grade: A-[The filmmaking] retains an insistent if restrained intimacy that feels like compassion.Beautifully subverting the form, Andrew Haigh has made an impeccably acted film as despairing as it is finally a bit hopeful...3 stars out of 4 -- Sobs are earned the hard way in this moving drama, which grips you with such scrappy humor and no-bull grit and grace that you'll be hooked.[An] elegiac, gorgeously photographed and sometimes almost fantastical journey...[A] muted, sometimes touching, other times arduous odyssey through impoverished parts of America that rarely show up on film.4 stars out of 5 -- The spirit of John Steinbeck courses through Andrew Haigh's latest film...Teenager Charley (Charlie Plummer) lives with his mostly absent father Ray (Travis Fimmel) and works at the local racetrack stables, where he befriends an aging horse named LEAN ON PETE. After learning that the horse is due for slaughter, he resorts to desperate measures to save the animal. Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny co-star. Based on Willy Vlautin's novel of the same name, this film adaptation was written and directed by Andrew Haigh.
