Synopsis Strongly acted by a cast top-lined by Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelowo, THE BUTLER has its share of strong dramatic moments in a story inspired by the real-life career of a White House employee...[D]eeply affecting....It's inspiring and filled with fine performances...In director Lee Daniels’ sweeping drama, Forest Whitaker excels as a discreet witness to pivotal moments at the White House.Forest Whitaker brings a quiet grandeur to the title...[A] brilliantly truthful film on a subject that is usually shrouded in wishful thinking, mythmongering and outright denial....Mr. Daniels has told the story of the civil rights movement in the bold colors of costume pageantry and the muted tones of domestic drama.Whitaker digs in deep and gives a marvelous under-the-skin performance...[T]he movie has a serious point to make....It argues that change often comes about through multiple channels -- some revolutionary, others less so...[Q]uite moving....Daniels' THE BUTLER is always engaging...THE BUTLER is an ambitious, sweeping period drama that manages to be incredibly affecting...Lee Daniels' THE BUTLER holds you, provokes you and ultimately moves you.[S]erving up major talent in relatively small roles....Then there’s Whitaker, steadfast, still, understated, commanding your attention, managing to be presidential himself in an ostensibly subservient role.Director Lee Daniels (PRECIOUS) teams up with Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Danny Strong to tell the remarkable story of White House butler Eugene Allen (played by Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker), who served eight U.S. presidents over the course of 30 years, and witnessed sweeping social change during his three decades of service at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Inspired by Wil Haygood's Washington Post article, the film features Robin Williams as Dwight D. Eisenhower, James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson, John Cusack as Richard M. Nixon, and Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan. Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Jane Fonda, David Oyelowo, Lenny Kravitz, Melissa Leo, and Vanessa Redgrave co-star.
