Synopsis | British helmer Richard Curtis (LOVE ACTUALLY) directs a cast of his countrymen (plus lone American star Philip Seymour Hoffman) in this comedy set in Britain in 1966. While the BBC would allow only two hours of rock and roll to be played on its airwaves a week, pirate stations broadcast music to the pop-starved masses. THE BOAT THAT ROCKED also stars Bill Nighy, Nick Frost, Rhys Ifans, and Kenneth Branagh.[A] rip-roaring Richard Curtis comedy...wired to the spirit of rock defiance.[A] rock-saturated comedy that proves life really is better when it's set to a '60s soundtrack...3 stars out of 4 -- More retro than renegade, PIRATE RADIO is buoyed by spirited performances and infectious tunes.3 stars out of 5 -- This blast of Sixties nostalgia, derived from the days when pirate radio ships broadcast off the coast of Britain with a motley crew of dee-jays, should appeal to ageing music freaks and fans of Brit-pop.Richard Curtis is good at handling large casts, establishing all the characters and keeping them alive....The wall-to-wall '60s rock keeps things bright.Stuffed with playful character actors and carpeted with wall-to-wall tunes, the film makes for easy viewing and easier listening...PIRATE RADIO opens with a zippy title sequence backed by the Kinks's 'All Day and All of the Night.[R]aucous, raunchy and punch-drunk with love for the rebellious spirit of rawk...Some comic bits work beautifully....[With] marvelous music, terrific performances and vivid sense of place at a special time...[T]here's no denying the comic energy of the cast. Couple that with blasts of Brit rock from the Beatles and the Stones to Dusty Springfield and David Bowie, and the ship is unsinkable.[The film] floats on a great soundtrack and is buoyed by an inviting cast... |
