Synopsis [I]t feels like the THIS IS SPINAL TAP for the Justin Bieber generation....What’s good about this movie is funny, and refreshing...[W]hen POPSTAR lampoons the specifics of modern-day pop materialism that it finds its most inspired gags. It’s also where it gets its darkest laughs... -- Grade: B[T]his fast, funny mockumentary is never faster or funnier than when it’s rifling through Conner’s albums and sampling his biggest, most dubious hits. The performances and videos are the best part, of course -- inspired and inventive beats and ballads that have sufficient musical integrity to make them credible jokes.3 stars out of 4 -- POPSTAR mixes the hilarity with a surprising amount of heart.POPSTAR razzes the bloated production excesses of Bieber/Taylor/Katy-level concert extravaganzas with a costume change that becomes a wardrobe malfunction...[S]martly self-aware...pretty fun....And the movie has a sweet message of bros-before-gold that’s not at all surprising considering the Lonely guys’ real lifelong friendship. -- Grade: B3 stars out of 5 -- [With] some genuine entertainment industry satire...and occasional forays into absurdism aimed at a part of the brain that isn’t impressed with TMZ.[T]he movie has a jaunty good time skewering the whorish showbiz media kaleidoscope -- the tabloids, the corporate tie-ins, TMZ...POPSTAR is filled with the sort of sly jokes whose targets music fans should have no problem recognizing. This mockumentary satire of the music business and modern celebrity centers on self-absorbed pop rapper Conner4Real (Andy Samberg). Once a member of a popular rap trio called the Style Boyz, Conner is now a solo artist about to drop his second album. Unfortunately, the release gets abysmal reviews, and his career begins to melt down when his attempts at rehabing his image lead to such disasters as a global blackout and a proposal to his girlfriend interrupted by a wolf attack. Eventually, Conner considers burying the hatchet with former colleagues Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) in order to reunite the Style Boyz. Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Sarah Silverman, and Imogen Poots co-star. Samberg, Taccone, and Schaffer co-wrote the screenplay, while Taccone and Schaffer shared directing duties.
