Synopsis 3 stars out of 4 -- [A]s Snowden continues to get deeper into the rabbit hole of privacy invasion, Gordon-Levitt’s performance becomes more exceptional....He grounds a complex story by giving it a very human, reactive element at its center.[A] quiet, crisply drawn portrait of the world’s most celebrated whistle-blower....Mr. Stone has made an honorable and absorbing contribution to the imaginative record of our confusing times.SNOWDEN is a superbly crafted, engrossing film that, while making no bones about admiring the central character’s actions and motivations, doesn’t go to visual or psychological extremes to make its case. There are excellent turns by Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson as MacAskill, and Lakeith Stanfield, his usual excellent, low-key self as a fellow surveillance geek who shares Snowden’s misgivings.3 stars out of 5 -- Woodley lights up every scene, Rhys Ifans sells his quietly sinister father figure and Gordon-Levitt grows into a performance that initially seems distractingly mannered.Oliver Stone directed this docudrama about whistle-blower Edward Snowden, who decided to leak classified information from the NSA in order to expose a massive, covert surveillance program orchestrated by the U.S. government. The film traces Snowden's career in both the NSA and CIA as he becomes disillusioned with his work and receives support from his idealistic girlfriend (Shailene Woodley). Rhys Ifans, Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, and Tom Wilkinson co-star.
