Synopsis The film crews, both Scherfig’s and her fictional one onscreen, deliver picturesque backdrops on a modest budget.THEIR FINEST is a treat that has something on its mind, a charming concoction that adds a bit of texture and bite to the mix. Genial and engaging with a fine sense of humor, it makes blending the comic with the serious look simpler than it actually is.At its best, which is often, THEIR FINEST by Danish director Lone Scherfig manipulates appearance and reality, relief and recognition, with exquisite finesse. As befits a film about making films.THEIR FINEST is too understandably serious to be called a romp, yet it has a buoyancy that lifts you and, in Ms. McCrory, a woman who does, too.Scherfig’s tonal instincts are spot-on, and her depiction of wartime London strikes a believable balance between grit and rose-tinted nostalgia. The film is broad and rib-nudging when it wants, understated and dignified when it needs to be.Scherfig doesn’t gloss over the cost of war. Death constantly resides in the background, except when it thrusts itself into the foreground, as it does without warning.4 stars out of 5 -- THEIR FINEST is a slight, warm, funny delight, informed by a gently etched feminist agenda.During the Blitz of World War II, a female screenwriter (Gemma Arterton) works on a film celebrating England's resilience as a way to buoy a weary populace's spirits. Her efforts to dramatize the true story of two sisters (Lily Knight and Francesca Knight) who undertook their own maritime mission to rescue wounded soldiers are met with mixed feelings by a dismissive all-male staff. Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Helen McCrory, Eddie Marsan, Jeremy Irons, and Richard E. Grant co-star in this period comedy-drama directed by Lone Scherfig (AN EDUCATION).
