Synopsis Without shying away from the fundamental obnoxiousness of this bull in the social china shop, Harrelson softens him somehow. For a prick, his Wilson is almost likable. -- Grade: B-[T]his hard slap at the perceived stupidity of the world by a disenfranchised citizen pitches its black humor in appallingly funny if occasionally poignant episodes as we get to know the title character’s Minnesota-based urban milieu.[Harrelson is] an appealingly physical, soulful wreck, skirting the outskirts of creepiness without ever losing the man’s deludedly optimistic sense of purpose. Dern, captivatingly fiery and exasperated, bounces off his flintiness expertly, as does Judy Greer as a sympathetic dog-sitter.Harrelson brings his wide-awake edge to this performance...[Y]ou couldn't imagine a better interpreter of Clowes' world than Harrelson. That mischief in the actor's eyes keeps us intrigued by the film's title character, a neurotic grouch who rails against the Internet and other plagues of the modern age.3 stars out of 5 -- Adding another portrait to the grump gallery, Woody Harrelson delivers a spectacularly boorish performance in Wilson, an adaptation of Daniel Clowe’s alt-comic that depicts the mid-life crisis of a snarling underdog. The film has plenty of bark...A salty curmudgeon (Woody Harrelson) who is discontented with how his life has stalled is shocked to discover he has a now-teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) put up for adoption by his ex-wife (Laura Dern) after their split. He tries to reunite the family, but his abrasive personality makes getting reacquainted unpleasant for everyone.
